An original signed oil painting by Belgian artist Pieter Nombluez (1923-2002), dated 1940 and depicting a traditional still life arrangement of bread, butter, pottery and glassware.

Executed at the remarkably young age of seventeen, this early work demonstrates the confident brushwork and strong compositional structure that would later underpin Nombluez's distinguished artistic career. Thick impasto paint, expressive dark outlining and a restrained earthy palette reflect the influence of the Belgian and Flemish modernist tradition during the early twentieth century.

Pieter Nombluez went on to become Director of the Municipal Academy for Fine and Applied Arts in Heist-op-den-Berg and was awarded the distinction of Officer of the Order of Leopold II. A memorial card affixed to the reverse provides additional provenance and directly links the painting to the artist.
