Original mid-20th century British painting by the artist Mabel Alleyne, titled Between the Lights. The work depicts an atmospheric evening street scene illuminated by glowing street lamps and a brightly lit corner building, with figures and a dog moving through the dimly lit street. The artist captures the contrast between darkness and artificial light beautifully, creating a moody urban nocturne.
Alleyne was a British artist and illustrator active in the early–mid 20th century and associated with the revival of wood engraving in Britain. She studied at Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited with several institutions including the Royal Society of British Artists. Much of her work consisted of wood engravings and book illustrations, making original oil paintings such as this comparatively uncommon.
This painting retains its original exhibition label on the reverse, showing it was submitted to the Royal Society of British Artists. The label records the artist’s address in Forest Hill, London, the title Between the Lights, and the original exhibition price of 10 guineas.
The painting is presented in a period solid oak frame, arrives ready to hang.
